About this tool

Sector Pulse Wales is a free tool that shows whether a business sector is growing or contracting in each part of Wales, and lets you see where your own business stands in it. It was built and is maintained by WeGetDesign, a Cardiff design and software studio and an Accelerated Growth Programme Gold Partner, for the benefit of Welsh businesses and the Business Wales advisers who support them.

It is offered as it is, for free, for as long as it is useful. It may be changed or withdrawn at any time without notice. If it helps you ask a better question of your adviser, it has done its job.

What the figures are

The company counts come from the Companies House register through its public search API: companies registered, dissolved, active and in insolvency procedures, grouped by the sector codes each company chose and the town in its registered office address. They are refreshed overnight. The size figures come from the Office for National Statistics’ UK Business Counts, published through NOMIS, which count businesses registered for VAT or PAYE by employment band and turnover band, rounded by the ONS to protect confidentiality. Map boundaries are from the ONS Open Geography Portal.

These are counts of companies, not measures of revenue, employment or success. A registered office is not always where a business trades; Cardiff in particular hosts Companies House itself and many company-formation agents, and its figures reflect that. The tool explains these limits wherever they matter, and the Reading this model guide sets them out in full.

What this tool is not

It is not advice. Nothing here is a recommendation to start, grow, invest in, lend to or close any business. It is not an official statistic and it is not produced or endorsed by Companies House, the Office for National Statistics, Business Wales or the Welsh Government unless a partner mark on the page says otherwise. Where it points you to Business Wales, the Development Bank of Wales or other public bodies, those organisations are responsible for what they offer, not us.

We take care to get the figures right and to say clearly what they mean, but we cannot promise they are complete, current or free of error, and we accept no liability for decisions made on the strength of them. If you spot something wrong, please tell us and we will look at it.

Privacy

This tool does not know who you are and does not try to find out.

  • It sets no cookies and uses no trackers, analytics, advertising or session-recording tools of any kind. There is no cookie banner because there is nothing to consent to.
  • It does not store anything about you on our servers or in your browser. The things you choose — sector, area, year, question — are held in the page address so you can bookmark or share a view, and nowhere else.
  • On the You view, the details you enter about your own business — the year you registered, your turnover band, how many people you employ, your legal form — never leave your browser. They are not sent to us, not saved, and not added to the link. Close the tab and they are gone.
  • The page loads its data from our own database of pre-computed public figures and its fonts from our own server. No request from this page goes to an advertising or analytics company.
  • Our hosting provider records ordinary server logs (IP address, time, page requested) for security and reliability, as every website’s host does. We do not use them to identify or profile anyone.

Because the tool processes no personal data, there is nothing for you to access, correct or delete. If you believe that is not the case, contact us and we will put it right.
